5. How do I apply for membership?

Veteran and Active Duty/Reservists interested in membership should fill out a membership application form online and submit payment. You can also find a paper application in our Crossroads magazine.

Currently, a limited number of memberships are available for Student Veterans (undergraduate and graduate programs) at a reduced rate. Please email member@mmaf1946.org to find out about how to apply.

6. How long does it take to process a new membership?

Due to ongoing membership database upgrades, it may take longer to finalize your application. Please allow approximately 10 business days for our team to review and process your submission. If we have questions regarding your military service, we may reach out to you for further details.

Once our team has processed your application and activated your membership, you will receive a welcome series of emails that give you more details about Marines’ Memorial and the benefits of membership.

Digital membership cards will be available on ourmission.marinesmemorial.org immediately after your membership is activated (login required). Hard membership cards will arrive in the mail in approximately 4 weeks. Please reach out to us by email at member@mmaf1946.org if you have questions.

7. I was a member a long time ago, and would like to be active again. Do I need to reapply for membership?

We would be glad to have you back!  Please call our membership department at 415-673-6672 ext 223 or email member@mmaf1946.org to check if you are still in our membership database.  If you are still in the database, we will only need payment and your current information (address, marital status, etc) to re-instate your membership.  If you are no longer in our database, you will be required to fill out a new application.

8. I am the widow of a US Veteran. Can I apply for membership?

A limited number of “surviving spouses” may receive membership benefits.  Please email member@mmaf1946.org with your name and address to request a special application.  Do not fill out a standard membership application.

9. My parent served in the US Military. Can I join the Marines’ Memorial?

Unfortunately, no.  The Marines’ Memorial Association is a 501(c)(19) Veterans non-profit organization and must comply with IRC 170(c)(3).  With this specific IRS designation, we are required to have a membership of 90% war veterans.  If we do not meet this requirement, we risk losing the ability to accept tax-exempt donations.  For more details on this rule, you may visit the IRS website here: https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/other-non-profits/veterans-organizations

And here: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/eotopice85.pdf (page 7)

Civilians may visit the Marines’ Memorial as a guest of an active Marines’ Memorial member.  This will allow you use of the Club & Hotel at “Guest of Member” rates, which is slightly more than what members pay, but still a good rate for San Francisco.  Guests of members are not permitted to use Reciprocal Clubs.

10. Can foreign military apply for membership?

  • Active foreign military may not apply for membership, but may use the Marines’ Memorial Club & Hotel at Veteran member rates.  If you have an active US military ID that indicates you have a Uniformed Services Affiliation, you may stay at the Hotel at the Active Duty rate (restrictions apply).
  • We allow a very limited number of Allied veterans to apply for membership with the Marines’ Memorial, based on our current percentage of war veterans (see IRS guidelines above).  These Allied members must be approved by the Board of Directors.  To inquire about applying as an Allied member, please email the Director of Membership, Jonathan Banks, at jonathanbanks@mmaf1946.org. Do not fill out a standard membership application.

11. How can I add my son/daughter/parent to my membership?

Per Marines’ Memorial by-laws, you may add your adult children (not in-laws) who are 21 years or older and have not served in the US Military to your membership.  You may also add your parents if they are non-military.  The cost is $50 per guest card.  Please call the Membership Department to pay over the phone with a credit card: 415-673-6672 ext 223 or ext 224.  Adding card holders can be done at any time during your annual membership, however, all card holders will expire the same time as the primary member.

12. What happens to my membership when I pass away?

For all levels of membership, the spouse listed on your membership record may keep his or her benefits (Life and Benefactor surviving spouses do not need to pay, annually paying Veteran member spouses will need to pay each year).  If your spouse is not listed on your membership, s/he will need to apply for the Surviving Spouse program (details above).

Memberships can not be passed to the next generation.  Once the “primary” member (person who served in the US Military) and the spouse pass, children can not continue to use the Marines’ Memorial as members, even if they held cards at one point.  This rule applies to Life, Benefactor, and annually paying memberships.

Please note spouses of Allied members and Surviving Spouse members are not eligible to continue receiving member benefits after the original card holder passes.

13. How does your “Member get a Member” program work?

Word-of-mouth is our best marketing tool!  If you are an active member of the Marines’ Memorial Association, we hope you will refer your friends to be members.  If a new Veteran member signs up and indicates that you referred him/her, you will receive 1 night free at the Club & Hotel!  Some restrictions apply: 1) the new member must be a paid Veteran membership; 2) certificates are sent quarterly; 3) certificates can not be transferred, replaced, or used beyond the expiration date; and 4) certificates are good on standard hotel rooms, Sunday-Thursday only.

14. How do I let a friend know about joining Marines’ Memorial?

You can send an email to your friend directly from https://marinesmemorial.org/refer-a-friend/ by using one of our three templates! You can send up to 10 emails at one time.

If your friend would prefer snail mail, please email your friend’s name and address to member@mmaf1946.org.

15. How do I cancel my Membership at Marines' Memorial?

You may cancel your membership at any time by calling (415) 673-6672 or sending an email to membership@mmaf1946.org.

FAQs FOR NEW MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES:

16. Are veteran and active members of the National Oceanographic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps, National Guard and Reserve Components eligible for Membership?

Yes.

17. What changed to permit NOAA and USPHS Commissioned Corps member to join the Marines’ Memorial Association?

Recent changes to legislation (specifically, Title 38, Chapter I, Part 3, Subpart A, SS 3.6) and regulations pertaining to veteran status and active-duty definitions were introduced to include the United States Public Health Service (PHS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), military academy cadets and academy prep school students.

18. What changed to allow National Guard Component members to join the Marines’ Memorial Association?

Previously, Guard members were considered veterans only if they served 180 days or more in a federal status outside of training. Prior to the new law’s passage, even if Guard members served for 20 years or longer, they were not deemed veterans unless they served on active duty. That included those serving in an Active Guard status. Recent legislation bestows official veteran status to National Guard members who served 20 years or more.

19. Can I still become a member if I am in a N/ROTC program and not attending a Service Academy?

Yes. If you are enrolled in an N/ROTC program in any approved college or university, you are eligible for Membership.

20. What is the annual subscription fee to join the Marines’ Memorial Association?

The annual fee is $275 for individual veterans (and spouse), $50 for Currently Serving members (free when they sign up at the Club & Hotel). Family Member Cards (+1, +2, +3, +4) are currently an additional $50 per family member.

21. What membership categories will not be affected?

Member rates will remain the same for: Semper Fidelis 2018, Active Duty Complementary, Student Veterans, Complementary, Benefactors (Life), Allied Force memberships.
